Designer Halvorsen   Builder Charles Vale  Launched 1961, Sydney  Length 14.3m, 47ft

TSMV Astra was laid down 1960 and launched 1961.  She was the private yacht of her builder, Charles Vale, a ferry builder contracted to the NSW Government based on the Balmain shipyards, Sydney.  She is a Halvorsen 47 by design and is one of three sister ships built at the yard.

For ten years she graced the Sydney waterways and environs before being purchased by a Melbourne architect, a Mr Don Lumsden, and steamed south to her new home port to be berthed at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club; she became renowned as 'the party boat'.

In the early eighties she changed hands to her new Skipper, Ted Gleeson, a retired Royal Australian Navy officer who took her into the Gippsland Lakes.

Astra cruised there for the next 30 or so years before being purchased by Vic Myles and Wayne Parsons, to steam her to her new home in Western Australia via Darwin. She is now berthed at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club.
